The Silent Sea

The Silent Sea is an independent personal board‑game design project, built for inclusive play among hearing‑impaired and hearing users. Set in a scenario where deep‑sea explorers intrude into sea creatures’ territory, its modular maps generate unique gameplay paths each session. Players assume roles of divers or sea‑creatures in a timed contest. Discarding audio‑based communication, participants rely on tacit understanding and self‑defined gestures to progress, mirroring underwater conditions.

There are over 15,000 hearing‑impaired people in Hong Kong. Though the community communicates via sign language, most hearing people lack relevant knowledge, which creates social barriers. This board game addresses such gaps, conveying the idea that silent communication can deliver equally effective interaction.
